Hello! I’m Nimesh Chahare
I’m a scientist, engineer, amateur artist, and much more. Check my art/CV.
I trained as a mechanical engineer, in material science. Living tissue turned out to be the material I found most interesting. Cells generate their own forces, feel the forces around them, and change what they do in response. I want to know how much of biology is decided that way.
My PhD at IBEC Barcelona was on the mechanics of epithelial tissues and novel ways to engineer them.
Then I moved to NYC, to Columbia, and spent two years looking at the same epithelial mechanics inside developing chick embryos, where the early brain expands as an active shell.
Now I’m in the Stuart group at EMBL Barcelona, asking how mechanics guides stem cells as they self-organize into a neural tube — the precursor of the brain.
On side, I’m the convenor of the International Epithelial Mechanics Fan Club. It’s a small community I started for those who share my interest. Join us!
Welcome to my corner of the internet!
I like learning new things, hanging out with people, reading books, cooking curries, making origami, and walking around the city.
I share some of these on my blog.
